Taking Care of Your Area Rugs
Caring for your area rug is not that different from caring for wall-to-wall carpeting. You need to vacuum it regularly and clean up spots and spills as they occur. From time to time, hot-water extraction cleaning may be needed.
- Regular cleaning — We recommend vacuuming twice a week in light- and medium-traffic areas and vacuuming daily in high-traffic areas.
- Occasional cleaning — Your rugs may occasionally need to be professionally cleaned using a hot-water extraction method. Do not have them dry cleaned or use bleach.
- Cleaning up spills — Food and beverage spills should be cleaned up immediately to prevent staining. Blot the spill with a clean cloth, and then spot clean the area with a mixture of 1/4 tsp. of dishwashing detergent in 1 quart of warm water. Rinse the area with water and blot it dry — do not rub or scrub! Do not use bleach and do not dry clean it.
- Shag-type area rugs — If you have shag-type area rugs, be sure to disconnect the beater bar in your vacuum cleaner and use the lowest height setting (see your owner's manual) to prevent damage to the cable yarn. Long yarn can wrap around the beater bar, and the brushes will damage the fiber. It's a good idea to use a carpet rake to loosen the soil before vacuuming.
