Keeping Laminate Flooring Looking Good
Although laminate flooring is inherently durable, it still requires a certain amount of care to ensure that it looks fantastic for as long as possible. Routine cleaning, protection, and occasional repairs help your new laminate flooring last for many years.
- Sweep the floor regularly — Sweep, dust, or vacuum often to pick up dust, sand, and other grit that can damage the laminate's finish. Use a vacuum cleaner with a hard floor attachment. Do not use the vacuum cleaner's beater bar.
- Clean up spills — As with all flooring, cleaning up spills as soon as they happen is critical in preventing stains from setting.
- Clean tough spots properly— Oil, paint, markers, lipstick, ink, tar, and other materials may require more aggressive cleaning. Blot the stain with acetone (nail polish remover) on a clean white cloth, and then wipe the area with a cloth dampened with water to remove any residue.
- Use the proper cleaning products — Periodically clean your floor with products designed for use on laminate flooring.
- Avoid the following — To prevent causing swelling, warping, delamination, joint-line separation, and other types of damage, do not use any of the following methods to clean your laminate flooring:
- Washing or mopping the floor with soap, water, oil-soap detergent, or other liquid cleaning materials
- Using steel wool, abrasive cleaners, or cleaners with ammonia or chlorine
- Any type of buffing or polishing machine

- Get accurate measurements — Our professionals will take accurate on-site measurements to ensure that we have the right amount of material.
- Remove the existing flooring — We'll be glad to do it, but we need to know that we need to do it ahead of time. If you decide to do it yourself or have someone else do it, please be sure the job will be completed before your scheduled installation.
- Clear the room — You may move the furniture yourself or have us do it, but please let us know in advance if you plan to have our installers do it. Please remove all fragile items from the room.
- Measure the door clearances — If the new laminate flooring is thicker than the previous flooring, your doors will rub. You'll want to have someone shave the bottoms of the doors so they function properly.
- Remodel first — To protect your new flooring, it's better to do any painting, wallpapering, or other remodeling before the flooring is installed.
- Plan the layout — In most rooms, the laminate runs parallel to the windows. In narrow rooms, it runs parallel to the longest wall.

- Leveling and smoothing the floor — Laminate flooring can be installed directly over the existing floor in some situations, but most flooring needs to be removed first. We'll let you know before the job begins. If your floor needs to be leveled or smoothed, we can take care of it.
- Moisture testing — To prevent buckling or cupping, we'll test the moisture in the subfloor.
- Expansion gap installation — You may notice a narrow gap around the outer edge of the planks or tiles. This is necessary to allow for the flooring to expand as the humidity changes, and it's covered by the molding.
- Handling irregularities — If we run into any challenges (cabinets, kitchen islands, irregular room shapes, tight spaces, etc.), our knowledgeable installation team knows how to handle them.
